Search for Neutron-Antineutron Oscillations Using Multiprong Events in Soudan 2
نویسنده
چکیده
We have searched for neutron-antineutron oscillations using the 5.56 fiducial kiloton-year exposure of the Soudan 2 iron tracking calorimeter. We require candidate nn occurrences to have ≥ 4 prongs (tracks and showers) and to have kinematics compatible with nN annihilation within a nucleus. We observe five candidate events, with an estimated background from atmospheric neutrino and cosmic ray induced events of 4.5 ± 1.2 events. Previous experiments with smaller exposures observed no candidates, with estimated background rates similar to this experiment. We set a lifetime lower limit at 90% CL for the nn oscillation time in iron: TA(Fe) > 7.2×1031 years. The corresponding lower limit for oscillation of free neutrons is τnn > 1.3× 10 seconds. PACS numbers: 11.30.Fs, 12.20.Fv, 12.60.Jv, 14.20.Dh

Motivation for a Neutron-Antineutron Oscillation Search in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
Grand unified theories generally predict the existence of baryon number nonconservation, manifesting itself in processes like proton decay and neutron-antineutron (n-n) oscillation. Experimental nonobservation of proton decay has led to the development of several experimental searches for n-n oscillations. To date, this phenomenon has never been detected, setting an experimental lower limit on ...

Generation of the cosmological baryon asymmetry in SUSY based model with broken R-parity and low scale gravity is considered. The model allows for a long-life time or even stable proton and observable neutron-antineutron oscillations.
متن کاملNeutron–Antineutron Oscillation as a Signal of CP Violation
Assuming the Lorentz and CPT invariances we show that neutron-antineutron oscillation implies breaking of CP along with baryon number violation – i.e. two of Sakharov conditions for baryogenesis. The oscillation is produced by the unique operator in the effective Hamiltonian. This operator mixing neutron and antineutron preserves charge conjugation C and breaks P and T. External magnetic field ...
متن کاملA Constraint to the Parity-Conserving Parameter of the Neutron-Antineutron Oscillations
The phenomenology of neutrino oscillations is extended to the neutron-antineutron oscillations predicted by the grand unified theories. There are six parameters in general describing the one-flavor oscillations: two real Majorana masses (of opposite signs), three Euler’s angles, and a phase multiplier χ. The sum of the Majorana masses, treated as a small parity-violating parameter ǫ, induces th...
متن کاملLimits on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time from the stability of nuclei.
We refute a recent claim by Nazaruk that the limits placed on the free– space neutron–antineutron oscillation time τnn̄ can be improved by many orders of magnitude with respect to the estimate τnn̄ > 2(T0/Γ) 1/2, where T0 is a measured limit on the annihilation lifetime of a nucleus and Γ ∼ 100 MeV is a typical antineutron–nucleus annihilation width. In a recent letter [1], Nazaruk claims to have...
